Why this book: the Return on Workshop

A workshop is the most expensive meeting your company holds. It takes your best people out of their day, puts them in one room and asks them to think together. Done well, it produces something no email thread ever will: a decision that everyone stands behind and is ready to act on.

I have designed and facilitated more than 1.000 workshops – strategy offsites, alignment sessions, innovation sprints, team days and trainings in which people work on their own challenges. The lesson from all of them: great workshops are not a matter of talent or charisma. They follow a structure. And a structure can be learned.

This playbook gives you that structure – six stages, more than 60 activities and the templates to run them.

What a workshop really costs

participants × hours × hourly cost per person
+ the work that waits meanwhile
+ venue, travel and facilitation

Twelve managers, one day, 100 EUR an hour each: 12 × 8 × 100 = 9.600 EUR in working time – plus at least as much in work that waits.

≈ 19.200 EUR

for one workshop day.

So ask: what must this workshop deliver to be worth that money?

A workshop pays off when it produces at least one of these

A decision

that would otherwise take weeks of meetings and emails.

Alignment

so the team pulls in one direction and stops re-discussing what was settled.

Ideas and options

the group could never have produced alone.

Commitment

named owners, next actions and dates that people keep.

Where the return is won – only one moment is in the room

Before the session

A clear outcome and the right people in the room. A fuzzy goal can only produce a fuzzy result.

In the room

From many options to one shared decision – every voice heard, not only the loudest.

After the session

Results out within days, owners follow up, progress is checked. This is where value is kept or lost.

One structure for every workshop

Six stages from the challenge to the result

Before, four stages in the room, after. Every activity in the playbook belongs to one stage – so you always know what comes next.

Can I read it here for free?
