A one-day data storytelling training for teams who put their analyses in front of management: find the message inside the data, pick the chart that carries it, and build a storyline your audience follows the first time.

Why teams book it

What your team takes away from a data storytelling training

Most reporting decks hold good analysis. This day is about the last mile: making the point land with people who have five minutes and a decision to make.

The message comes first

Every chart and every slide starts from the statement it has to prove.

Charts that carry the point

The right chart type makes the finding obvious before anyone reads the axis.

A thread that holds

One storyline runs through the deck, so the audience arrives where you want them.

Three focus areas

From raw analysis to a story people act on

The day moves in three steps, and every step ends with your team applying it to their own material.

01

Finding the core message

Work through an analysis in a structured way and land on the one sentence that matters.

  • Explaining variance: plan versus actual and issue-tree logic
  • Getting to causes: 5 Whys and the Ishikawa diagram
  • The insight question: what changed, how much, why, so what?
  • Reducing a dense analysis to what the audience needs
02

Data visualisation

Choose the visual that supports your statement and shows the data honestly.

  • How the eye reads a chart in the first three seconds
  • Gestalt principles: proximity, similarity, common region
  • Matching the chart type to the question behind it
  • Waterfall, benchmark, dot plot and Gantt in practice
03

Data storytelling

Connect single insights into a storyline the whole deck can carry.

  • One thread from the first slide to the last
  • Narrative structures: the story arc and the answer-first pattern
  • Recommendation tree and the five-sentence pitch
  • Arguing for the people who are actually in the room
Outcomes

What changes in your reporting the following week

Everything in the day is built for Monday morning, on the decks your team already produces.

Core messages on the point

Every slide carries one clear statement, written as a sentence the audience can repeat.

Less on the slide, more in the room

Each element earns its place, so attention lands where the argument is.

Storylines that hold

A thread the audience follows without effort, from the opening to the recommendation.

The right chart, every time

A simple selection logic that turns “which chart?” into a five-second decision.

Ready for management

Analyses that decision-makers and other departments understand at first reading.

Templates you keep

Structure templates, a chart-choice guide and checklists for everyday reporting.

Data storytelling training with Joern Steinz, founder and trainer at SkillDay

Joern Steinz (MBA)

Your trainer for the data storytelling training

For more than 15 years he built the analyses himself: as a consultant and later in corporate development, preparing the numbers that went in front of boards and management teams, under time pressure, with real decisions attached.

That is where the material for this day comes from. Since 2014 he has been training teams and leaders across Europe to make complex information clear, visual and convincing — always on the charts the participants bring with them.

Questions we get about the data storytelling training

Who is this training for?

Teams who prepare and present analysis results for management and for other departments. The focus is clear communication and drawing out insight, and no statistical background is required.

Can we work with our own data and slides?

Please do. In the workshop phase participants rebuild their own real examples, which is where the transfer into everyday work happens.

How big is the group?

The format is designed for six to nine participants, so there is room for individual feedback on everyone's slides.

Where does the training take place?

In-house at your offices anywhere in Europe, at a seminar location we organise for you, or online in a live virtual format.

Which language?

English or German, whichever suits your team. Materials and handouts come in the language of the session.

What do participants take home?

A handout with structure templates, a chart-selection guide and checklists, plus their own slides in a reworked version.
